Member of the Month
Get to know your fellow beach volleyballer's better! Each month we highlight one of our members in the member-of-the-month section with a little interview.
Peter Loughlin
Q: How long have you been playing beach volleyball and what drew you to this sport?
Since the beginning of April 2008, so about 9 months now. I wanted something outdoors that involved the beach or ocean and was active. I took some surfing lessons at about the same time. Nine month’s later, my volley’s coming along quite well but I still can’t surf.
Q: Where do you prefer to play beach volleyball, and who do you like to beat?
Not so much about where but with whom, and not so much about beating them as trying to improve our game and having fun in the process. Always seem to have fun games and whether it be with the usual gang or with people who just happen past, have met some great people/players that way.
Q: Did/do you play any other sports?
Cycle, I’m a roadie but it seems to be every other month at the moment. Over the years I have trained Karate for about 3-4 years and almost had a level 1 coaching certificate but moved to Germany just after finishing so was never certified. I was a dive master many years ago, tried indoor rock climbing, been the member of 5 gyms on 2 different continents, ballroom danced for about a year (great skill to have on the volley court sometimes!), kayaking, bushwalking and more recently surfing.
Q: Hobbies/favorite pastimes?
Organising, eating – can that be a hobby? Cooking, reading books, science fiction mainly (see occupation), movies and try to write fiction sometimes, even belonging to a creative writing group for many years.
Q: What's your occupation?
In short I fly spacecraft. The official version is that I’m a Senior Spacecraft Analyst, with a team controlling a fleet of geosynchronous/geostationary telecommunications satellites for one of the major telco’s.
Q: What do you want to be when you grow up?
Fit, happy and handsome! Volley’s doing a blindingly good job with the first 2, and, well, 2 out of 3 ain’t bad hahahahaha
Q: Something about yourself that your fellow volleyballers don't know?
All the volleyballers are actually helping me with a bit of a mid-life crisis! Only realised this the other week but the one thing I am really happy with in my life at the moment is my volleyball and all the absolutely wonderful people I’ve met through it. We’ve gone camping, seen movies, done bbqs and had all-day stints at cafés (7 hours – should have seen the bill hahahahaha) and I’m looking forward to many more activities, new people and volleyball games in 2009.
